Palm Beach farrier Jacque Karlson describes what quarter cracks are and how they can be fixed:

“A quarter crack is a crack in the quarters of the hoof. You can see it on the side to the heel of the hoof, usually starting up at the coronary band, and it can be caused by a lot of different things. It can be caused by concussion, blunt trauma, conformational issues…a lot of different things.

[A new method for addressing quarter cracks] was actually invented by Curtis Burns, the owner and creator of Polyflex shoes. Traditionally when quarter cracks are being taken care of or patched up, you actually have to sew it together, and it would create more trauma on the hoof capsule. Curtis came up with a way to patch the hoof by securing the hoof without causing any additional trauma to the hoof capsule, which is ideal…”
