Co-host Pati Pierucci on the golden retriever:
“Golden retrievers are incredibly adorable — an exuberant, Scottish gundog and one of America’s most popular dog breeds. They have many talents, from hunting to field work to, actually, search-and-rescue which I think is quite neat. Size-wise, the females can get anywhere from twenty to twenty-one inches at the withers and can weigh fifty-five to sixty-five pounds. The males are twenty-three to twenty-four inches and can weigh sixty-five to seventy-five pounds.
They have a beautiful golden color with a stunning broad head…sweet, intelligent eyes…a personality that is easily explained as joyful; I have never met a golden retriever that doesn’t just wake up thinking that the glass is half-full, and I love that. They are relatively easy to train, but they do have a lot of energy so it’s important to have a job for them, because they really maintain sort of a puppy-type personality through most of their adulthood until they get quite older, so that’s something to think about.
One of the biggest and most important questions is, ‘Do they shed?’ Yes. They shed a lot, so it’s going to mean you have to do weekly grooming to keep the hair down…”
