Tigger Montague on allergy testing for horses:
“For horses, allergy testing is a blood test. There are several labs that will run the blood against [allergens from] trees, grasses, hay, different common seed components, mites, mosquitos, bugs… Then the lab will give you a number. So when you get the results back, a lot of the tests will be in red where the horse is over the line, where they’re testing strongly to a potential allergen. Some things you can do nothing about. Horses that are allergic to mosquitos, or allergic to dust…you can do the best that you can, but you’re never going to eliminate those.
I generally start with the really high markers. If a horse is testing high to timothy, but is testing higher to orchard grass, I’ll start with the elimination of the orchard grass and see if that makes a difference. It’s a process.”
