Cathy McEnroe talks about managing stress, and how the mood of the human herd is reflected in the equine herd:
“When a manager or a trainer is very organized — kind of the fearless leader in the herd — then that person is writing a schedule at the same time every day, letting everyone know what the schedule is for those horses the next day, letting the grooms know what the plan is for tomorrow. You literally can see a peacefulness come over the group [when the schedule is given]. Before that, everybody — the humans — start to get a little anxious, and it’s reflected in the horses. You know, the horses are hanging their heads out, they have their grooms…they know, and they totally feed off of their caregivers, the grooms. So, giving the grooms a schedule the day before means they come in more confident and relaxed with their horses, and that makes a tremendous difference.”
