Rangeland and forest management expert Matt Deschell shares insights on how we can help wildlife around us:
“One of the things that most folks don’t realize, is that sustainability of our agriculture and forest ecosystems really works hand-in-hand with the wildlife. A few years ago I worked on a big, eleven-state sage grouse initiative where the whole mantra was, “The cows and the sage grouse working together.” When you look at the management of our natural resources — both from a cropping standpoint and from a livestock standpoint — when managed properly, they’re beneficial to both, because the wildlife uses the land that agriculture might not be able to, and vice versa. So you can actually manage these wildlife habitats very successfully with agriculture.
Our country has gotten to the point where everything is fairly highly managed. And if we take a hands-off approach, those things really come apart. You know, Mother Nature isn’t set up to take care of itself in a lot of cases anymore, so [to help wildlife], being able to manage those things in cooperation with agriculture is one of the best tools we have…”
