Co-host Tigger Montague explains how vitamin E supplements are crucial to neurological health:
“Cognitive dysfunction syndrome is a degenerative disease that affects most animals and many humans. In humans, we refer to this as dementia or senility. While research on horses is not as advanced as it is in dogs, we can extrapolate from the canine model — that a diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids can be beneficial both as a preventative and to slow the progression of the disease. […]
Vitamin E is an important fat-soluble antioxidant. It’s involved in a wide range of biological processes ranging from immune function, control of inflammation, cognitive performance, regulation of gene expression, and signal transduction…The brain is highly sensitive to oxidative stress, which can be a major contributor to neurodegeneration. Supplementing with vitamin E provides [neurological support] and a degree of protection. Full-spectrum vitamin E is important — it’s the whole [vitamin E complex] family rather than one part — and it confers the most health benefits to horses, dogs, and humans…”
