Five-time US Dressage Finals winner Jim Koford offers a few secrets to musical freestyle success:
“People do freestyles for different reasons, and everyone has to find their own way. When you first start, it’s terrific to have a general pattern when the music goes, but you’re not as beat-driven and it’s not as tight in the choreography…The rider isn’t so obsessed with the music that it’s a stressful experience. To me, the music makes it fun; it’s not an additional source of anxiety. I never wanted [Adiah] to feel drilled. I never wanted her to feel like, ‘Oh gosh here we go again.’ I wanted her to go in the ring and I wanted people to clap and I wanted her to feel special when she’d go in. So, she would go in the rings and light up. And it really made it so she was fun to compete, she enjoyed competing, enjoyed the crowds…and when you have the right music…it’s a win-win.”
