Co-host Tigger Montague explains the importance of maintaining protein in the diet when rehabbing horses:

“Lion[heart] broke his coffin bone in two places so he was stallbound for four months. The biggest thing I learned from that was: protein. The horse’s body will cannibalize itself if it’s not getting enough protein. And, of course, when we have a horse that’s not working and not exercising, we immediately think we need to cut back on the food. Well, we need to cut back on the calories, but we shouldn’t be cutting back on protein. Everybody has seen a horse that has been in layup and they start losing muscle. Lion never lost any muscle because I kept the protein levels up. I didn’t do it with alfalfa hay because there’s almost too much protein, and when they’re confined it can make them a little ditzy. So alfalfa cubes or alfalfa pellets are a great way to keep all the essential amino acids in the horse’s system. So I stress this to people who are rehabbing horses: Just don’t cut down the protein.”
