Tigger, Pati and Jenn discuss the foods that can help with keeping horses cool:

Tigger: “There are specific foods you can use on horses and dogs that are cooling foods. For instance, if you want to cool your animals down, don’t use a sour apple. It’s heating. [Use instead] sweet apples, applesauce, sweet berries, coconuts are cooling…mangoes that are ripe, melons, oranges, papaya, pomegranates, strawberries and watermelon. Don’t give watermelon to a metabolic horse, though. Broccoli, cooked carrots — raw carrots are warming — celery, cucumber, dandelion greens, kale, pumpkin…those are good cooling foods.

On the human side, salted butter is warming, unsalted butter is cooling. Hard cheese is warming. Frozen yogurt is warming. Sour cream is warming, but cooling is soft, unsalted, not-aged cheese…goat’s milk, goat’s cheese, ice cream…”

Jenn: “I wonder why ice cream is cooling but frozen yogurt is not?”

Tigger: “Because it’s milk. I think it has to do with fermentation of the yogurt; that’s going to be heating.”
