Co-host Pati Pierucci describes her philosophy on lungeing horses:
“I’m a big advocate for lungeing, but you have to have a plan. I don’t lunge just to lunge. In my training, I had a younger horse…a four-year-old…and until I really knew his reaction to stuff, I would lunge for at most maybe ten minutes each way just to make sure I was giving him an opportunity to get the tactile part of his brain working…if he was going to be silly, react to stuff…to get an idea of where he was. Eventually I eliminate it and don’t use [lungeing]. But I do feel like it gives the horse an opportunity, if they do want to be a little silly or crack their back a little bit. You want them to be able to express themselves, but do it with a reasonable amount of exhileration. I’ll also do that with a young horse; if I’m going to a show, I will always lunge them before I get on them there, because I feel like it burns off some steam…”
